Places to Ski

Over the past 8 years I've been fortunate enough to have visited/worked in some of the best ski resorts in the world. Here are my views on some of those resorts.

Deer Valley

According to Ski Magazine, Deer Valley has been the number one ski resort in North America for the past 5 years (yes, it finally lost this rank to Whistler Blackcomb this year). Deer Valley really is as good as those 5 years suggest. It may not have the biggest vertical, the most gnarly terrain, or even the backbowls of Vail, but it has plenty of things going in its favour. Deer Valley receives plenty of snow, averaging 350" per year. This in itself isn't particularly remarkable, but more notable is the quality of the snow. Like the other Salt Lake City resorts in Utah, Deer Valley is blessed with what I can only describe as the lightest snow that I've ever skied. Other areas can boast about their huge snow bases but they don't come close to the quality of snow seen in Utah. Like Utah licence plates state "The Greatest Snow on Earth".

Deer Valley is famous for its perfect corduroy, exceptional customer service and amazing dinning. If these are high priorities for your next ski holiday then I'd say definitely visit Deer Valley. The grooming is hands down the best I've ever seen anywhere. In fact many of the runs are double groomed, making for incredible conditions on those mornings when you don't have 10" of fresh powder to go frolicking in. Customer Service! well Deer Valley definitely does customer service better than any other resort (Beaver Creek is the only resort that I've been to that comes close). Where else will your skis be valeted for you when you arrive at the resort? Oh and free ski storage isn't too shabby either! The food in all the lodges is outstanding, I took a special liking to the salad bar at the Silver Lake Lodge... Delicious!!!

I instructed at Deer Valley during the 09-10 season, and I really liked the place, but I often heard people say "but, yeah the terrain isn't challenging enough" I disagree. If you know where to go there is plenty of challenging runs to be had, in fact what is great about Deer Valley is that because they cap the number of guest each day and because most guests at Deer Valley prefer groomed runs, you can easily find fresh powder up to a week after a storm.
